One of the nation’s oldest and largest historic preservation organizations, Galveston Historical Foundation was incorporated in 1954 in response to the deterioration and potential loss of Galveston Island’s extraordinary architectural legacy. As the organization matured, it expanded its role on the Island as a leader, not only in historic preservation, but also in community development, economic revitalization and heritage tourism. GHF is the steward of 11 historic attractions and museums including Ashton Villa, a nationally renowned antebellum mansion, and the Texas Seaport Museum, home of the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA. A splendid survivor designated as one of America’s Treasures and a National Historic Landmark, ELISSA brings Galveston’s rich seaport heritage to life and continues to set international standards for maritime preservation. More than 500,000 people visit these properties annually. GHF also works to enhance the quality of life in Galveston’s commercial districts and residential neighborhoods. A highly visible example is The Strand, Galveston’s revitalized downtown, which contains one of the largest collections of Victorian commercial architecture in the United States and has been named a National Historic Landmark District. Through its preservation programs, partnerships with public agencies and private organizations and its corps of dedicated volunteers, GHF serves as a catalyst for historic preservation throughout Galveston Island. Thousands of children and adults learn about Galveston’s rich heritage through GHF’s educational
