In my humble opinion, Hitler was not gay. But sill some people
doubt and some others, books and web sites as evidence of
their conviction, relentlessly try to prove his homosexuality.
Hitler didn't like homosexuals. He never liked them. He used
those few homosexuals who provided needed talent and skills
he couldn't get from heterosexuals, and tolerated them as long
as they were useful. He was quick to get rid of homosexuals
whenever their usefulness was at an end. The final break with
Roehm had been building since Hitler attained power in 1933,
but problems had developed for several years before that. He
used Roehm's homosexuality and that of some of his
companions in the SA as a clever excuse to help justify the
Blood Purge and gain support for it in public opinion.
The most famous advocacy for Hitler's homosexuality is the
"Pink Swastika" book (1) which makes fascinating reading but
without really convincing that "schön Adi" was gay. The book
shows that the NSDAP was infiltrated by homosexuals without
bringing up the evidence that the Fuhrer was himself gay. Too
many accusations rely on ear-say and gossips and the whole
thing misses the point. That these SA leaders were homosexuals
does not prove that the leadership of the third Reich was
positive about homosexuality. The mainstream of the leadership
was actually to the contrary against homosexual behavior. But
still the doubt lingers on. Doubtless, Hitler’s life and sex life
were enough weird and insane to explain some eccentric
allegations. Furthermore it is easy to impart on Hitler every
deviousness, bad penchants, deformity: nobody is going to sue
you for libel or smear your work. And it might even make juicy
reading and good money. Finally, the "Pink Swastika" book tries
hard -on the basis of many fabrications- to convince the reader
that homosexuality is perfectly normal and the books needs
some serious confrontation.
Once stored in categories like "monorchid" or "cryptorchid" (2)
or qualified as « gay », Hitler is not any more a mystery for
homophobic people or bullies of all sorts. All is explained and it
is because he was “gay” or had only one testis that Hitler did
what he did. In England just before the war, people used to sing
this little song :
Nothing is so simple. In fact Hitler’s personality was complex:
all his life, the man was torn between extreme attention to
people and complete indifference. He could suffer changes of
mood at the speed of a whiff for no apparent reason. He could
throw himself even as a child in fits of rage and seconds after
he was a delicious and careful friend. In this respect, he was a
spoiled brat with a high propensity to want to be the chief, the
leader, the one who knew better, but even with these
personality problems people seemed to like him anyway.
Sometimes, people got weary of his excesses and fancies, but
in general he was not considered as a bad person or even an evil
character. August Kubizek really liked him and during WWI
some of his colleagues at the front did as well. Most however
were weary of his weird character. But until 1919, many people
–like his landlords in Munich- even happened to find him
charming and his “morality” was never contested.
His teachers however, more used to judge young characters for
what they portend, did not like him. His teacher in French and
German said once:
In the trenches and under the shells, Lance-corporal Hitler
delivered a baby of his own making: the Hitlerian new morality
which will be very different from the teachings of the Church
of the pre-war German Empire or even from the Hitler’s
morality of the Viennese period. In brief, it is not his alleged
sexual conflicts that gave birth to a mad Fuehrer but his
experiences during the first world war.
According to all probability and many testimonies, Hitler was
not a hot Stud - not even lukewarm, and certainly not even
tempted by the possibilities of normal sexual relationships. This
might be understandable if he was (as Russian doctors
discovered in may 1945) a monorchid. According to their Third
Reich entourage, Hitler and Eva had a normal sexual life but
nobody has ever collected their pillow talks.
As a teenager or a young adult, Hitler was shy with young (or
less young girls), incapable to take the initiative, scared by the
eventuality of venereal diseases which might have been a
convenient excuse. His friends or colleagues of the Vienna
period always said he had “decent ideas” about women. In the
mentality of the times, it means that Hitler harbored the most
conventional and conformist views about the role of the woman
in the society. It was then summarized by the acronym “K.K.
K.” (which does not stand for Klu Klux Klan), but for Kuchen
(Kitchen); Kirche (Church); Kindern (Children); the famous
German trilogy of the 3Ks. Jumping from Hitler’s indifference
to women to attraction to men, some authors have written and
still write that Hitler was gay.
There is no evidence that Hitler was gay. He spent endless
nights in Vienna in a pension where gays were too many for the
pension, to be honest, and Hitler was straight. Pre-war Vienna
was, indeed, as hot a city as Paris of “La Belle Epoque” and
maybe much more: prostitution was rife, artists everywhere,
money flowing all over the place and homosexuals were not
scarce. The capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was literally
bursting at the seams with artists and homosexuals and not all
were rich or even making a decent living.
A lot of those fellows, like Hitler, used to sleep in these
pensions but this fact does not make young Adolf gay. Is there
any other evidence that Hitler was gay ? The same fanatics
affirm that Hitler felt much more at ease with homosexuals than
with women. Nothing surprising from a man who was
obviously afraid of women, who seemed totally alien to the art
of womanizing and who –to say the least- was not physically
equipped as a stud. Homosexuals reassured him, they were not
a threat to his virility, and not a menace to his shyness. With his
gay acquaintances Hitler could talk about anything without
second thoughts about a possible encounter. The Viennese
Hitler of 1909 – who is a stranger to the Munich Hitler of 1919-
probably preferred the company of people who were then
ostracized by mainstream society and were living in what was
considered a sort of underworld.
Alone in Vienna with few friends and little money, Hitler looked
at himself, as he wrote in Mein Kampf, as “a dog, an outcast.”
These feelings probably prompted Hitler to look for and find
within communities of marginalized and vilipended people a sort
of affective and intellectual brotherhood or family that had been
suddenly denied to him. Until 1908, Hitler has been his mother
“beloved Adi” and there always was some money for him. Only
one year after Klara’s death, it was a total void, affective and
monetary. Mom is gone; so is the inheritance.
To tell the truth, in spite of his artistic penchants and his great
architectural ambitions, our young Hitler showed, during his
years of low life, an appalling conformism. Third evidence,
some fanatics of Hitler’s homosexuality say: “Precisely ! He
rejected homosexuality as against nature because he was scared
of his own true penchants.” The argument - used and re-used
by Michel Tournier- is a bit stretched. Furthermore,
homosexuality is in our nature and many teenagers have been
confronted to this dilemma as well. Too often, it is conventional
morals that make us straight not our real nature. This alone is
not sufficient reason to hate homosexuals and put them in a
concentration camps fifteen years later.
In my view, Hitler was the most conventional of all men and
this is the real reason for all his failures in the world before
1919. This ingrained conformism plagued Hitler all his life and
was the source of those incredible about-faces of his 20’s and
30’s that were detonated by the horrors of war. It is the
consequences of war that turned the shy teenager into a bully
and an advocate of violence and brutality. The polite lodger
became the impervious herald of non-compassion and the
exterminator of the weak and the sick, including the Jews, this
“vermin on the social body”.
Who was Hitler ? A petit-bourgeois spoiled by his Mom, a
pseudo-intellectual with hyper-conformist views, a demiurge
unable to go beyond an orthodox approach to problems. As
such, Hitler always considered any intellectual or artistic
innovation as a threat to his intelligence and his capacities of
imagination, which were limited. In the conduct of war, he will
be later on extremely prophetic and will forecast the reactions
of his enemies with great clarity but more because he was a
cynical man harboring no illusions on the real nature of his foes
than for reasons of military genius. In the conduct of the war,
he was successful for a limited period of time (until 1942) and
essentially through the famous "blitzkrieg".
However it is not because you have tremendous ambitions and
visions of grandeur that you are doted with imagination and
open to conceptual changes. The hatred that Hitler nourished
for the “Art Nouveau” and for Kandinsky, the Russian Jewish
exile (who lived in Munich at the same time as Hitler) and dared
to succeed, whereas Hitler was barely surviving proves that
Hitler was basically motivated by envy and jealousy.
Historians tend to forget that Hitler was fundamentally envious
and jealous. To oppose these traits he only had disproportionate
ambitions and mediocre talent. He wrote once to Kubizek that
he could not stand to see his friend “pay attention to all those
people around him.”
Effectively whereas Hitler has just been denied admission to the
Fine Arts Academy, Kubizek was doing very well and was on
the right way for glory. Unfortunately the war put an end to his
chances and he ended up as a clerk.
Fourth evidence : some people, who absolutely want to
welcome Hitler within the gay community, argue that he was
guilty of “pederastic practices” during the war. Now we have
something new : not only he was gay but was he a pedophile as
well ? Where did he find the under age boys in the trenches ?
Mystery ! And they go on saying that this is WHY Hitler was
never promoted to officer rank.
Let us be serious : Hitler was not promoted sergeant for two
reasons. The first is that he was such a remarkable estafette
that nobody in the regiment wanted to lose him, the second
was, as one of his officers pointed out, that “(he is)such a
neurotic guy that there was no reason for a promotion.” Last
but not least, during the war, soldiers at the front indulged
themselves in sexual practices so bizarre and unheard of before
that time that homosexuality could have been considered as a
small sin.
According to German sexologist, Magnus Hirschfeld, soldiers in
the trenches practiced masturbation to the point where they
called their right hand “meine liebe frau” (my dear wife). An
Australian doctor on the Italian front estimated in one report to
the Italian Chief of Staff that “10% of all men in his regiment
practiced zoophily, notably Hungarian hussars (Light cavalry
members) with their mare.” Treated like animals by the war and
their officers, men had no qualms to indulge themselves into
zoophily and considered their own horses as admissible sexual
partners.
As soon as 1933, Hirschfeld’s sexology institute was under
attack by the nazis and thousands of its records, books and
photographs were burnt in auto-da-fe. They maintained detailed
records of many court-referred sex offenders, including
important Nazi rapists, homosexual child offenders and
pederasts. Hirschfeld, then in France, prudently decided not to
come back to Germany. Magnus Hirschfeld, who headed the
Institute, was a prominent Jewish homosexual. Hirschfeld also
headed a "gay rights" organization called the Scientific-
Humanitarian Committee.
The Gemeinschaft der Eigenen inspired the formation in 1920
of the German Friendship League, which changed its name in
1923 to the Society for Human Rights. The leaders of this
group were instrumental in the formation and the rise of the
Nazi Party. Adolf Brand published the world's first homosexual
periodical, Der Eigene ("The Special") (Oosterhuis and Kennedy:
cover). Brand was a pederast, child pornographer and anti-
Semite, and, along with many homosexuals who shared his
philosophies, developed a burning hatred of Magnus Hirschfeld
and the SHC. Later, when Hirschfeld's Sex Research Institute
was destroyed, the SA troops were under the general command
of Ernst Roehm, a member of Brand's spinoff {sic} group, the
Society for Human Rights.
At the beginning of the conflict, the prevailing thought about
abstinence, in Kaiser’s Germany, was that it would be “a
sublimation for soldiers and an opportunity to give their best”.
Freud and four years of trenches would soon put their stupid
ideas back where they belong: in the trash bin.
Magnus Hirschfeld was asked, during the war, to give his
advice about the case of a Bavarian corporal who had
intercourse with a sow : the man was arrested and severely
punished but none of his comrades was shocked by the act and
they found the punishment unfair and they laughed about the
trial and punishment.
After the war, Hirschfeld reported that thousands of soldiers
had become impotent or were incapable to enjoy a lasting
erection. As soon as 1916, an other German sexologist, H.
Fehlinger, wrote that “men’s sexuality at the front is totally
annihilated.” In these conditions, why would Hitler’s sexuality
would have escaped by some sort of miracle ? Why would
Hitler’s homosexuality (if that has been the case) have been
severely repressed or even noticed ? In a world of madness,
one more mad man does not attract attention or retribution. To
the contrary : at the end of the war, an Austro-Hungarian
officer told the story of one of his men, a Bosnian soldier,
caught red handed in the act of masturbation in public at the
great joy of his comrades. Guess what ? He was sentenced to 2
weeks of furlow to enjoy home and his wife and he came back
all happy and ready again to kill naughty Frenchmen once more.
Even in those puritan times, officers were able to understand
certain things.
They were themselves not alien to weird habits and pleasures.
Besides zoophily and masturbation, prevalent military culture
was linked to all sort of anal obsession and infantile regression.
Author Erich M. Remarque wrote in his book “ Im Westen
Nichts Neues” (All quiet on the Western Front, 1928) told the
world how anal issues ceased to be taboos at the front and how
men, officers and men of the rank and file, enjoyed to talk
about anal matters: feces and others excrements. It is no
wonder that puritan Himmler had the book auto-da-fed.
In “Schipper an der Front” (Schipper at the front, S. Fischer
1929), Jewish poet and lawyer Martin Beradt (1881-1949) -
who fled Germany for New York in 1940- described dinners at
the Officers Mess where scatological jokes were given in so
disturbing details and among such hilarity that he could not go
on with his dinner. Defecating and urinating was a permanent
topic of talks between the men at the front, crouching in public
to defecate was normal and also loaded with sensuality; a lot of
men had even made their own little “defecating box” that they
enjoyed to use during long hours, far away from the atrocities
of the war. At the front, defecating became an art, a subtle
moment of pleasure, and so it ceased to be a dirty bodily
function that one accomplishes rapidly, almost shamefully.
Infantilism was even more frequent than sexual troubles. After
the war, infantilism was a source of thousands of divorces and
failed marriages. Regression into childhood, rejection of the
present, flight to the past, particularly when the mother was
present and reassuring, permanently damaged the psychological
balance of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, most of them
uneducated and rough. It is not small wonder if, ten years later,
they fell prey to the sexually charged vociferations of Adolf
Hitler !!!
Furthermore, after the war, these sorts of behavioral troubles
always went along with problems in the workplace: men could
not readapt themselves to strict hours of work, to labor
conflicts that they judged “childish” or wanted to settle by force
and on top of all they could not adapt to marital life with its
constraints and conflicts. Thousands of young wives started
complaining that they got back a teenager, incapable of erection
or afflicted with early ejaculation, after the war was over.
It is well now known that Hitler had difficulties adjusting to his
partner’s expectations. It is also well known that, after his
accession to power, he stopped working altogether unless it
was for consideration of some architectural project or giving
one of his speeches that fascinated and drew huge audiences.
In his book, Rausschning wrote that Hitler’s speeches made
him think of an “oral enema” and this is a very good image
indeed. During his inflammatory speeches, Hitler purged himself
of his fears, his traumas, all the excrements inside him and he
reached with the audience a paroxysm close to orgasm.
In 1934, in the wake of the Night of the Long Knives, the
Nazi Party systematically started to put under file German
homosexuals. The destruction of the Institute for Sexology in
1933 had been a first step toward eradicating an openly gay and
lesbian culture from Germany and a way to destroy any
information about the SA which was packed with homesxuals.
Police closed bars and clubs such as the "Eldorado" and banned
publications such as Die Freundschaft (Friendship). In these
early stage the Nazis drove homosexuals underground thus
destroying the Gays networks of support.
In November 1936, referring to the night of the Long Knives,
Hitler sustained that homosexuality was a biological danger and
that the NSDAP never hesitated to do away with this “plague”
even if it meant the party had to cut off in its own flesh (thus
alluding to the assassination of Ernst Roehm homosexual and
leader of the SA in 1934).
Ernst Roehm, SA leader, was in cold blood shot by the SS on
Hitler’s direct order. Who can seriously believe this guy was
Hitler’s lover ? The memoirs of Hitler's close friend Ernst
Hanfstaengl (1970) do contain a hint that, around 1923, their
friendship developed an intensity "that transcended the fraternal
German "Du" and gave rise to rumors of a more far-reaching
mutual affection." But Hanfstaengl too considered such rumors
to be "highly exaggerated".
Just before the war, 24,450 homosexuals were sent to
concentration camps. In his Memoirs Lucifer Ante Portas
published in 1950, the lawyer Rudolf Diels (1900-1957),
founder of the Gestapo, wrote that Hitler thought Greece’s
decadence was caused by pederasty and homosexuality and that
“those degenerated guys should be eliminated from the surface
of the earth for the purity of the race.”
This monstrous collection of appalling ideas and bogus theories
might have made for Hitler a propitious ground for impotency,
difficult erections, defecating sessions with his mistresses and
endless oral ejaculations but it did not make Hitler a gay. The
real poison in his veins was not an alleged gayness but a rabid
and destructive anti-semitism that brought the Nazis to produce
disgusting movies like der Jud Süss and to extremities more
known as the Holocaust.

Police reports of this period described him as a “Sexual Deviant”. On which
basis ? No detailed mentions of his deviousness were given and one can raise
doubts about the methods of the Vice Squad of this time: gossips, innuendos,
smears, prejudices that needed an official confirmation were probably the
bread and butter of these reports.

Vienna in 1908, that “homosexuality was against nature.” These are very
conventional views indeed especially when one considers that sodomy is not
the reserved domain of homosexuals, a fact apparently stranger to the future
Fuhrer.

legal code, which criminalized homosexuality. The organization was
also opposed to sadomasochism and pedophilia, two of the favorite
practices of the militaristic, Roehm-style homosexuals who figured so
prominently in the early Nazi Party. Hirschfeld had formed the SHC to
carry on the work of the pioneer "gay rights" activist, Karl Heinrich
Ulrichs (1825-1895).
Ulrichs had written against the concept of "Greek love" (pederasty)

members of the party stained themselves with abominable faults and
for this crime they were shot.”
One year after Roehm’s murder, Nuremberg Laws were promulgated.
They were presented to the nation as a mean to protect Germany until
the end of times by shielding the German blood from all contamination
(sic). One of the Nuremberg Laws even repressed the sheer
homesexual intention. It was proudly bearing the name of Gesetz zum
Schutze des deutschen Blutes und der deutschen Ehre (Law of
protection of the German blood and German honor) or
Blutschutzgesetz in short (resic).
